| The Karlstad Healthcare Center is a small rural skilled nursing home. In 2002, we started a process called Culture Change. Culture Change is very different from the traditional nursing home model. It gives back independence and the freedoms of choice to the resident, thus allowing the nursing home to be an extension of their own home. With Culture Change, we divided up the building into three communities. All residents and staff belong to one of these communities. Each community has weekly meetings to plan events or special meals. Every community has their own dining and living room areas where they can eat, watch TV, or spend time with their families. Staff choose which community they wish to be assigned to, and they work in that community whenever possible. This allows the staff to better know and care for their residents. Residents are encouraged to sleep in. They awaken and put their call light on when they are ready to get up for the day. Quality, individualized care is a priority! The Karlstad Healthcare Center offers the five meal plan instead of the traditional three meals per day. The residents love it! They make their choices the day before, so they get what they want to eat. In 2005, the Karlstad Healthcare Center was the recipient of a national award. We were awarded the American Healthcare Associations Step One Quality Award. This was a great undertaking for our staff, and we are proud to have been awarded it. "Resident First" is how our residents are treated! This nursing home is really a HOME! |
